Ever wanted to wear a lily pad? Now you can! This Crochet Lily Pad Hat Pattern lets you rock a charming lily pad right on your head, bringing the pond wherever you go. It’s the perfect accessory for adding a touch of nature and whimsy to your wardrobe.


Materials and Tools
6mm crochet hook
Yarn Needle
Worsted Weight Yarn, Cotten is Recommended
Colors: Green for the body and at least one additional color for the flower (I used white and pink)
Note: I used two skeins of Big Twist Cotton in the color sage and scrap cotton yarn for the flower applique
Galvanized wire rope, 1/16″ wide (you can find this at home depot!)
Optional: 12mm Pearl Beads
Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations
Note: These are US crochet terms
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
inc – increase (2 new stitches in one)
Picot stich – ch3, sl st into first ch
BO – bind off
Pattern Notes
Hat
Row 1: 6sc in magic circle
Row 2: x2 sc in each stitch
Row 3: *sc in next stitch, sc in* repeat from * to the end (12)
Row 4: *sc in next 2 stitches, sc in* repeat from* to the end (18)
Row 5: *3sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (24)
Row 6: *4sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (30)
Row 7: *5sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (36)
Row 8: *6 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (42)
Row 9: *7 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (48)
Row 10: *8 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (54)
Row 11: *9 sc stitches, sc in* repeat from * to the end (60)
Row 12: *10 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (72)
Note: Continue inc rounds to make a larger hat, or complete less to make it smaller. For me, through row 12 gave me a 6.5inch circle.
Row 13-27: sc in each st (72)
Note: Continue working in the round longer to make the bucket of the hat deeper, or complete less to make the bucket of the hat more shallow.
Row 14:*11 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (78)
Stop working in the round here, for the rest of the pattern, you will be working back and forth
Row 15: ch 1, turn, sc in each st
Row 16: 6sc, sc in, *12 sc, sc in* repeat from * until 6st remain, 6sc (84)
Row 17: ch 1, turn, sc in each st
Row 18: *13 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (90)
Row 19: ch 1, turn, sc in each st
Row 20: 7sc, sc in, *14 sc, sc in* repeat from * until 6st remain, 7sc (96)
Row 21: ch 1, turn, sc in each st
Row 22:*15 sc, sc in* repeat from * to the end (102)

Work this final row around the wire

Note: Continue the pattern to make a larger brim, or complete less to make it smaller
Hat Flourishes
Hat Ribbon
Optional: Pre-string your yarn with 12mm pearl beads
With Beads: *ch 10, picot st, ch 10, slip a bead* repeat until desired length is reached
Without Beads: *ch 10, picot st* repeat until desired length is reached
Attach the hat ribbon to the hat. To do this, wrap the hat ribbon around the bucket of the hat and add a few loosley tied pieces of yarn across the bucket to keep the ribbon in place (think of the tied yarn like a belt loop.
Flower Applique
Any flower applique pattern will do!
Note: For the purposes of this pattern, I have recreated the flower with different yarn.
Flower 1, 6 Petals
Row 1: 12 sc into a magical circle, sl st
Row 2: In the same space as the sl st, work *[1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc] in the same stitch, sl st in the next stitch * repeat between * 5 times
BO

Flower 2, 10 Petals
Row 1: 10 sc into a magical circle, sl st
Row 2: *(2hdc) into next st* repeat between * 10 times
Row 3: In the same space as the sl st, work *[1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc] in the same stitch, sl st in the next stitch * repeat between * 9 times,
BO

Stack the flowers and sew them together through the middle, attaching 3 of the optional 12mm pearl bead to sit at the center.
Attach the flower applique to the center of the lily pad brim split.
